Your first match: the checklist.

Nobody’s first match is clean. That’s fine — the goal is to finish it, learn the rhythm, and want the second one. Here’s what you actually need, against what the gear pile on the internet says you need.

Non-negotiable

  • Rifle: needs to be able to hold a zero and shoot MOA or better — plus two magazines and a bipod. 10-round mags will work; 12-round magazines are best if you’re in a state where they’re legal. Zero confirmations can generally be made the day before the match at range days.
  • Ammo: for a one-day match, 100–150 rounds — matches generally run 8–10 stages of 8–12 rounds. For a two-day match, a minimum of 200–300 — generally 18–20 stages of 8–12 rounds per stage. The upper end of those counts leaves room for zeroing and truing data on range days.
  • A ballistic solver that lines up with your ammunition out to 1,000 yards. Phone apps do the job if you’d rather not buy a dedicated solver.
  • Ear protection at a minimum; eye protection is encouraged, though not required at most centerfire matches.
  • One bag that does prop duty and rear elevation duty. A Mini or MiniX Fortune Cookie (known for years as the Tater Tot) covers all the props initially without a second purchase. Typical PRS match setup: heavy fill, no rubber — tune grip with bag wax if desired.

Genuinely useful, not required

  • Knee pads · ammo binder · chronograph
  • Tripod · binoculars · rangefinder
  • A pack to carry everything

The part nobody puts on a checklist

Tell the squad it’s your first match. Squadmates will hand you dope, run your timer, and lend you the bag you forgot. This sport’s dirty secret is that it wants you to stay.

Borrow first if you can. Seriously. You’ll know what you’re missing after your first match — purchase against that list, not the forum’s. If you borrow a pinch-top and spend the drive home thinking about it — that’s when the Bag Finder earns three of your minutes.
